Rally at Schenley Park

Standard

Last night there was a Raise the Wage/anti Mitt Romney rally in the park by the Library in Oakland. There was popcorn and cake. They had political themed games around, like Sex Ed Cornhole.

The main attraction was two large screens with a stage in between. The screen on the left was showing political satire and facts about the Bain Corporation. The screen on the right didn’t come on until the actual acceptance speech started.

Shortly before the speech, a series of speakers got on the stage. Some of them went to Tampa to try to speak to our congressmen about minimum wage. Some got closer than others, but none of them had a ton of success in getting face to face time. Though it didn’t sound like that really surprised anyone. They said they were moved by meeting people from all over with the same concerns, so it was not a negative experience.

During Romney’s acceptance parade, they showed various slides on the left screen. I got pictures of some of my favorites. They also played the Imperial March while he made his way to the stage, and I thought that was hilarious. It was kind of like a strange version of Mystery Science Theater 3000 or Rocky Horror Picture Show, as we all sat on the lawn in the park, yelling at the snake oil salesman with the strange Stepford like facial expressions.

Notice the myriad of nail polishes as well.. Sorry for the crappy cell phone photos. Most of these are from before I even had a smart phone.

Upcoming things:

  • 30 days of lists starts on the first! I’m signed up and mostly ready to go!
  • I think I’m going to do a quick post with my pictures from last night’s “Anti-Romney Rally”.
  • Finishing Liz’s care package.
  • Still need to pull out the stuff to hock on ebay. There will be shameless plugs. Oh yes, there will be.

Sketchbook Work

Standard

My friend Liz and I have a sketchbook that we pass back and forth between each other. Liz’s lives in Falls, PA. I started the book after seeing some sites on StumbleUpon where groups of artists had done something similar. Here’s my work from the book.

I have a lot of stickers. Liz and I have the same quirky sense of humor. So I started the book with a joke.

Try It At Home

Standard

Reader and good friend Jocelyn, inspired by the chunky Milani gold glitter, posted this photo of her mani…

Long time friend, fashion blogger, and artist Elizabeth sent me these shots of her version. Which I also adore:

She says she used three glitters: Essie’s “set in stone, la colors nail art in gold glitter, and NYC’s “starry silver glitters 105”. The colors used are Milani’s 80’s collection neon, Essie aruba blue, and a la colors shade.

“Mermaid Nails”

Standard

So I recently became enchanted with the idea of a Mermaid nail manicure. I saw it on my feed over at facebook. I love the color palette and had some of the materials already. So I thought I could do this.

Inspiration:

Here is what I used:

  • Tarina Tarinto “Empire”
  • Nails Inc “swiss cottage”
  • Essie “as gold as it gets”
  • Milani Jewel FX “Gold”

There was also base and top coat, clear, but those are usually a given. I did the Empire color all over (1 coat), then the swiss cottage on the top 3rd of the nail. I did a pretty light coat of the Essie all over and then the Jewel FX on the tips, trying to kinda place the chunky glitter where it looks good.

It ended up looking like this:

So since I don’t swim, and I didn’t really go on vacation anywhere this year, this is my little way of trying to squeeze out the last little bit of summer before we curl up into fall. Hope you like and give it a try. I’d love to hear and see it if you do!

First Post

Standard

Well. Here it goes, I suppose…

I’m leaping right into the deep end. Although it feels more like “getting off the pot”. I’ve contemplated starting a blog for close to a year. Much like the rest of my life, I have a hard time being decisive and making a commitment. But in the end, I usually end up just making a random choice. I mean, I looked at features and thought about it, and then just said “what the hell” and decided on this one. If I end up not liking it, I can switch to another site. I guess…

I couldn’t pick a “theme”. Will I be a fashion blogger? Will I be an art blogger? Will I post thoughtful insights? Pictures of my cats? Well, it all remains to be seen. I’ll post what tickles my fancy.

Here are some things coming down the pipeline:

  1. 30 days of lists challenge. Not sure all what this entails. I still have to sign up for it. I might do the lists all old school analog and post pictures. I’m not really sure what the lists are, but I’m always up for a challenge.
  2. I’m going to post my most recent manicure I did tonight. I’m proud of my work. I mean, for just learning stuff from the internet and goofing around, I don’t think it’s half bad. Plus, I have over 70 bottles of nail polish. They are separated by color in baggies. This count does not include the stickers.
  3. I’m likely to post the stuff I’m making. Currently this includes a recycled Birchbox box that I’m making a care package for a far away friend in.

I have some goals for myself.

Bigger picture, I’d like to just keep being better every day. I want to strive to improve everyday. Whether that is my posture, or my swearing habit, or my laziness. I want to be epic and amazing. Smaller picture would be my specific goal to finish all the things I’ve left unfinished over time. That’s the one for the fall and winter, most likely. So you’ll probably see progress reports on those things.

How often will I post?

As often as I can. I’m online more than I care to admit. No, really. More than I care to admit. So hopefully they will be frequent and fascinating.

The rest we’ll just figure out as we go. It’s bound to be a learning journey, but I’m a quick learner. Enjoy.
